A referral programme gives an existing customer a code to share. When someone new buys with that code, both sides can be rewarded.
Turning it on
Referrals are a plan feature. If Referrals is missing from your admin, your current plan does not include it, and it appears the moment the plan does.
How a code is used
The person being referred enters the code at checkout, in the same box as a coupon code. They do not need to know which of the two it is, and neither do you: the system checks both.
What the advocate gets
You choose the reward when you set the programme up:
- Store credit paid into the advocate's wallet. See the Customer wallets article for how a balance is spent.
- A coupon issued to them.
- Commission, tracked for you to settle by hand outside the app.
Credit granted as a reward is money you gave away rather than money you took, and the reports treat it that way. It shows as a cost, never as income.
A reward coupon belongs to one person
A coupon issued as a referral reward is locked to the customer who earned it. Nobody else can use it, and nobody else can even see it exists.
Where codes do not work
Referral and coupon codes are online only. They do not work on the desktop or mobile tills, which cannot check a code while offline. The admin says so on the referrals page.
